Thames Tideway Tunnel: Operating Strategy, System Control, Commissioning and Inspection
The Thames Tideway Tunnel project, a key component of the London Tideway Tunnels (LTT), is designed to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges into the River Thames by capturing and diverting combined sewage to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works via the Lee Tunnel. This paper outlines the operational strategy, system controls, commissioning process, and inspection plans underpinning the tunnel’s transition from construction to live operation.
A comprehensive Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system enables automated and manual control of flow and air systems, integrating data from 24 sites. The operating strategy prioritises environmental protection, asset integrity, and simplicity, using rainfall forecasts to switch between “wet weather” and “extreme wet weather” modes. Air management minimises odours and hydrogen sulphide levels using ventilation systems and real-time monitoring.
Commissioning involved rigorous dry and storm system testing, integration with the existing Lee Tunnel, and the development of a virtual operating system for training and decision support. Inspections, vital for ongoing system integrity, combine remote technologies such as drones and LiDAR with traditional entry where necessary.
The project exemplifies best practice in urban infrastructure delivery, balancing operational resilience, regulatory compliance, and sustainability.
