Today we announce the publication of a new framework which sets out how the government will use data analytics and AI to boost performance and make projects more cost effective in a joint paper between the Infrastructure and Projects Authority, the Major Projects Association, the Association for Project Management and the Central Digital and Data Office.
Data Analytics and AI in Government Project Delivery

Last June the Major Projects Association’s Executive Director, Andy Murray, went to Belfast to meet with the Heads of Profession for project delivery across the Government’s numerous departments to explore the opportunities and impact of AI and data analytics on Government project delivery. Also at the meeting were representatives from the Government’s Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO), the No.10 Data Science Team, the Association for Project Management (APM) and MPA member Projecting Success.

The meeting triggered the development of a framework which sets out how the government will use data analytics and AI to boost performance and make projects more cost effective.

The framework is captured in a joint paper between the IPA, MPA, APM and the CDDO, published today, which aims to accelerate the adoption of AI and data analytics on government projects through: developing data skills and capability at scale; developing data standards; providing infrastructure for evidence-based decision making; experimenting together; and establishing data partnerships.

The MPA’s Executive Director, Andy Murray, commented: “Projects are temporary and, for major projects, involve multiple organisations – so data is often siloed or not kept in a useful format after the project completes. In short, we suffer from data poverty. For the project world to exploit the rapid advances in technology and data analytics we need to move from a position of such data poverty to a position of being data rich. We also need to be better able to make use of the data through improving data literacy of project professionals and project literacy of data professionals. The joint paper published today sets out how we can start a collective approach to seizing the opportunity to radically improve project performance by taking an evidence-based approach to how we initiate and deliver projects.”

The Major Projects Association will be showcasing and exploring the use of AI and data analytics are two upcoming events.

• AI in Construction – 27th March
• Pace of Change in AI, Data and Analytics – 25th June.

These events are free to members.
