The Knowledge Sharing session of the Project Sponsorship network on 17th November introduced some wonderful colourful analogies to capture the role and significance of the project sponsor in major projects. That’s no coincidence, as the sponsor is one of those roles that are extremely hard to describe to anyone unfamiliar with the arcane world of project delivery. The Project Sponsor is one of those roles that have grown up in the last twenty or so years, along with others such as the business relationship manager or the knowledge broker, which recognise that managing complexity depends on the quality of the relationships between the parties involved; the ability of the organizations concerned to balance the tensions and contradictions that exist between value and cost, benefit and disbenefit; and to temper the requirement for speed of delivery versus the need to adapt to fast changing stakeholder requirements and external environments.
In that context, being able to consult, listen to and learn from your peers is an opportunity that is beyond value and this, amongst other benefits, is what the sponsorship network that is facilitated by the Major Projects Association offers to its members.
The network is open to all of our members and so whether you are a full-time or occasional sponsor, if this sounds useful and you’d like more details of the networks activities and events, then contact us and we will be happy to provide you with more details.
In the meantime, let’s keep the flow of analogies coming … is it about greasing the wheels, providing the glue or do you favour some other rich picture of what’s at the heart of effective sponsorship?
