Thameslink: Railway Systems Staging

Summary

Thameslink Programme’s Railway Systems team undertook the complete track remodelling and re-signalling of all lines east and west of London Bridge station. Design and development started in January 2009, enabling works took place from April 2011 and construction was completed in January 2018. The remodelling and re-signalling works enable the route to provide 30% more capacity for train services.

The project took place at the same time as London Bridge station was being completely rebuilt in stages. It required integration with the civils team while maintaining almost the same level of train services throughout the 4.5-year construction phase.

This was the most complex mainline major re-signalling ever undertaken on Network Rail’s infrastructure on Britain’s fourth busiest station. The multifaceted, long-term project required a complex staging programme to move the operational railway around the construction sites – at London Bridge and the Bermondsey Dive Under – while keeping the railway operational for passengers.
