Nuclear new build – Does the UK have the capability and capacity to deliver?

Summary

Through, “The Industrial Strategy – The UK’s Nuclear Future” (BIS, March 2013) the UK Government and industry have together declared a clear vision for the UK nuclear industry.
This seminar will examine how the UK are creating and developing the capability and capacity to deliver the nuclear new build programme quickly, and will include:
• The National Skills Academy Nuclear are already working very closely with both client side and supply chain organisations and have a clearly defined programme of initiatives
• The development of the Nuclear Innovations Research Advisory Board (NIRAB) and its Delivery Partner, Nuclear Innovations Research Office (NIRO) are the catalysts for complementing the skills requirements and leveraging the opportunities for development and innovation through the National Nuclear Laboratory and the Nuclear Advance Manufacturing Research Centre.
• Formation of the Nuclear Industry Council and the Nuclear Owners Group has enabled an overarching framework that demonstrates how the UK can most effectively build capability for nuclear. The sub-groups of Business Capability, Skills, Communications and Cost Reduction along with others will be part of an interface and strategic influence with the wider infrastructure investment programme.
• We will hear and be party to government and the Nuclear Industry Association outlining a holistic approach as to how it envisages delivering the clear vision set down in the Strategy through the Nuclear Supply Chain Action Plan and how it is being delivered.

Note – this topic has been addressed at previous MPA seminars. We recommend that you take a look at our reports on the subject. ‘The British AGR Programme – June 1982’, ‘Sizewell B – A case study – Dec 1994’ and ‘A new generation of Nuclear Power Stations –are we ready? – Feb 2006.’
