31st Annual Conference: A Successful Project Every Time

Summary

It is important, not only to change the perception that most major projects in the UK are finally delivered over budget and late, but to actually improve our record to ensure that within a 5 year horizon that all major projects are in fact finished on time, within budget and with the desired outcomes and benefits. So what do we need to do in our various business sectors to achieve those goals?

Many if not most of the key foundations for success are determined at the initiation stage of projects. This requires a mature and sophisticated clienting team, clearly defined reasons for undertaking the project and an alignment of all parties to an agreed ambition or outcome.

Through our heritage of past MPA seminars we have a wealth of lessons and knowledge to enable all members from whatever sector to set down defined steps and processes to ensure success. Many of these key components are of course people dependent and require strong leadership and robust business cases, from which financing can be secured, and procurement and consenting can be overcome with minimum delays and costs.

In the UK alone the Government has identified over 200 major projects with a cost base of over £400bn. All are critical to the UK economy and are planned for delivery over the next 10-20 years. In addition of course there are many private sector projects being planned.

The challenge for this Annual Conference is to begin to set down absolute key project requirements at the concept and business case stages, followed by identified staged progressions through initiation.

We have assembled a number of high profile speakers who influence project pipelines and with input from delegates we hope to produce a definitive and timetabled routemap to achieve the desired position for all major projects by 2018.
