Reflecting on COP 26 – What next? Highlight Report

After the hiatus of COP 26, where does that leave the Major Projects community in the drive to deliver Net Zero?

This event will reflect on the outcomes of COP 26 and showcase the Major Project Association’s Position Statement following COP 26 and the role of Major Projects to not only deliver projects more sustainably but to deliver the very projects at the heart of a sustainable United Kingdom.

As well as calliing for action at government level, we will look at the changes we need to make as a sector in such areas as:

– How to drive the adoption of already existing sustainable technologies? Do it now!

– How can we develop a meaningful visualisation of carbon within a project? Show the impact!

– How can we incentivise all partners to collaborate and innovate for greener outcome? Stronger together!

Our sustainability themed events are open to non-members of the Association. If you are a non-member and would like to register to attend this event, please contact eleanor.burquest@majorprojects.org.

Climate and Sustainability – Delivering Net Zero Full Report

Major Projects are amongst the hungriest of human activities when it comes to carbon. Re-educating clients, construction and implementation contractors and individuals to adopt a new and sustainable approach which mitigates project impact and creates a sustainable infrastructure legacy remains a huge challenge. How can the Major Projects Sector reduce their own carbon footprint and  step up to deliver the UK government’s goal of Net Zero Carbon by 2050? What steps can organisations take to ensure they can deliver carbon neutrality and minimise climate change?

Join us to learn from member organisations and partners that are playing their part in making change happen. You will also learn more about the role of the MPA’s Sustainability Ambassadors Network in creating a shared commitment to delivering net zero and building a network of sustainability professionals fully prepared for the future.

We’re delighted to have Claire Gott MBE, UK Head of Industry & CSR, WSP confirmed to chair this event.

Social Inclusion in Major Projects Full Report

In a period when austerity and Brexit have highlighted the social divide in our country, the need for an approach to major projects that puts social inclusion at the core of what we do has never seemed more relevant. If the pot of money is smaller but the need to bring people together is greater we must look closely at how we deliver value to our clients, engage with stakeholders and serve the society and communities who are the ultimate beneficiaries of our labours. But do all players in the sector really understand what social inclusion means and how to realise social value on our projects?

This seminar aims to bring together companies at all points on the social inclusion learning curve to learn from each other through knowledge sharing and networking to drive a more proactive and informed approach to social inclusion in the major projects sector.

Getting beyond the benefit cost ratio Highlight Report

“Gross national product counts air pollution, and cigarette advertising and…the destruction of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play…the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages. It measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.” Robert Kennedy (US Presidential candidate speech, University of Kansas 1968)

In the UK, “The Green Book” is HM Treasury’s Guidance on how to prepare and appraise proposed policies, programmes or projects to obtain best public value and manage risks. It states that:

“The relevant costs and benefits to government and society of all options should be valued, and the net benefits or costs calculated… Wider social and environmental costs and benefits for which there is no market price also need to be brought into any assessment. They will often be more difficult to assess but are often important and should not be ignored simply because they cannot easily be costed.”

The Major Projects Association believes that the published benefits and costs that emerge using this guidance do not fully capture the wider benefits that can accrue to the very largest projects. And whilst the Green Book provides guidance on how such cost and benefits can be brought into project appraisal (e.g. multi-criteria analysis) there are difficulties in application. Additionally the influence of subjective judgements means that this sort of analysis is not widely or effectively employed.

Yet these benefits can be material for major projects and that not including them risks significantly understating the net overall long-term benefits that will be realised from a major project. We therefore recommend that more effort and thought is put into considering such wider benefits with greater rigor as part of the overall appraisal process. At this breakfast meeting we will discuss what more can be done to ensure that decision makers “get beyond the BCR” and prioritise major project investment utilising all relevant information.
