Consents and Stakeholders - Embracing the planning process
Achieving planning consent is an integral and essential part of the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects. It is often a challenging, time-consuming and costly process, the success of which can be heavily influenced by stakeholders and how projects manage these relationships, but also how they engage before, during and after the process. Many projects struggle to complete the process in a way that is experienced positively, by both the promoter and their stakeholders.
Utilising and drawing upon expert knowledge and best practices can be invaluable as projects across all industries face similar challenges. How do we take our stakeholders on the journey with us? How do we minimise the risks of objections and delays to the planning process and maximise the likelihood of success? What does success look like?
Speakers at this event will focus on the changes to planning policy and legislation as well as exemplars of good practice. In addition, the seminar will present the findings from a study and interviews with industry leaders across Government, transport, nuclear, renewable energy, engineering, construction and utilities - which have been undertaken by CJ Associates on behalf of the Association. Delegates will hear valuable insights directly from these industry leaders and experts about the challenges they face in the planning process and in engaging stakeholders and the community to learn about their greatest successes.
Join us for an afternoon of informative, insightful and lively discussion.

Michael maintains an active role in supporting the Major Projects Association and contributed to last year’s Annual Conference which considered how you identify and manage stakeholders to create clarity of vision, identify stakeholder requirements and translate them in to project requirements.
Prior to joining Advance, Al has been a Project Management functional director and has been involved in complex project and programme management for 15 years including the delivery of complex projects, programmes and portfolios as both a client and a supplier, developing new collaborative ways of working across the client-supplier interface in the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Al’s background is as an Aerospace Engineer with 20 years as a Royal Air Force Engineer Officer, subsequently shifting into the aerospace industry, across into transportation and now into a multi-sector consultancy. Al’s interest in the topic of Sponsorship comes from many years’ experience of working in and around many different types of project sponsor and seeing a lack of consistent guidance and direction for the role. With Advance, Al has supported teams, projects and organisations to develop appropriate and effective leadership and collaborative environments. He sees effective Sponsorship and Leadership as key to the successful delivery of Major Projects.
