Creating and sustaining a PMO - does one size fit all?

Seminar
Seminar Title: Project Management Office – 4th June 2015 Venue: Deloitte, 2 New Street Square, London EC4A 3BZ MPA will be delivering an exciting double-header on PMOs comprising a seminar in the afternoon followed by a lively debate in the evening. Afternoon Seminar: Creating and Sustaining a PMO – Does one size fit all? The afternoon seminar, chaired by Roy Hill, Director, CH2M, will explore how to create and sustain PMOs and will seek to answer the question: Does one size fit all? To help answer this, the seminar will start by exploring what we mean by a PMO. For example, is it something that just collects, aggregates and reports project status? Or should it also help define and raise delivery capability or provide advice, guidance and support to project/programme management personnel? Perhaps PMOs should have delivery responsibility or be the ‘home’ for project and programme managers? PMOs often provide assurance, but can a PMO provide fully independent assurance if it’s also doing any of the above? The seminar will seek to address these issues by reference to different PMO contexts – e.g. challenges of global PMOs, the changing role of the PMO at different levels of organizational maturity, the nature of the PMO for different organizational delivery models – with presentations from TfL, SKF, Project Angels, BBC and Deloitte. Marrying the type of PMO to the organizational context is key to creating a PMO, but how are they sustained? What are the ‘deadly sins’ that can undermine the value of a PMO and bring about its demise? The seminar will conclude by looking at how to keep a PMO energized and ensuring it continues to add value to its organization. Evening Debate: PMO – a function or capability? The evening debate will be chaired by Tim Parr, Partner , Deloitte, and will draw on lessons from UK and global practices to debate (1) the merits of centralised vs dispersed PMOs and then (2) the merits of treating a PMO as a function or a capability. The debate will include panellists from C2HM Hill, Highways Agency, and Rolls-Royce. If you would like to attend both the afternoon seminar and the evening debate please go to http://www.majorprojects.org/events/events.php and register separately for each of the two events – two acknowledgement emails will be sent to you as confirmation.
