Hot on the heels of announcing that this year’s annual conference will be on the topic of AI, last week OpenAI (the owners of ChatGPT) launched its new update ChatGPT-4o – the ‘o’ standing for omni.
Omni can be used just like the previous version using a browser with a simple prompt to ask questions or give instructions. It’s now available as a desktop app too, but with the same look and feel. Some of the new capabilities include being able to interact using text, images, video and voice/sound – being multi-modal hence the Omni label. This is both for how you provide input/instructions and the content it generates.

“Talking to a computer has never felt really natural for me; now it does. As we add (optional) personalization, access to your information, the ability to take actions on your behalf, and more, I can really see an exciting future where we are able to use computers to do much more than ever before.”
– Sam Altman, founder of OpenAI
The way ChatGPT works with other systems has improved too, through enhanced APIs, making it more connected and in turn more powerful. It’s barely 18 months since ChatGPT was first launched and the pace of change in terms of usability, capability, connectivity and performance is remarkable.
“OpenAI’s latest update, ChatGPT-4o, marks a significant leap in AI technology with its ‘omni’ capabilities. This means not just text, but also image, video, and voice interactions, making the user experience more seamless and intuitive. It’s like conversing with a knowledgeable colleague or advisor. The improvements in connectivity through enhanced APIs only add to its robustness. As AI continues to evolve at this breathtaking pace, the potential for its application in major projects and data analytics is enormous.”
– James Garner, Senior Director at Gleeds and host of Project Flux, a podcast on AI in Construction.
