It is with great sadness that we learnt this week of the death of Dr Martin Barnes, Executive Director of the Major Projects Association from 1997 until 2006. Martin served as a Non-Executive Director prior to taking on the Executive role and remained a Board member until November 2011.
His influence upon the Association was immense. Breathing new life into it in the 1990s, formalising the vision and the sense of purpose which still guides us today.
Martin was the first person to articulate the notion of the Iron Triangle in his work at The University of Manchester. He was the “architect” of the NEC contract a title which pleased and irritated him in equal measure and was a founding member of APM. He was also the author of the Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement – still in use today. Any one of these contributions would be sufficient to mark him out as a leader in our field and yet Martin gave us all of them. His contribution to our community is unmatched.
Martin was incredibly generous with his time and support and, although he was a man of giant intellect and insight he will be mostly missed for his thoughtfulness and humour.
We are incredibly blessed to have known him and to have benefitted from his many talents.
