Thames Tideway Tunnel: Sustainability Report 2024

This final standalone Sustainability Report from Tideway charts the legacy of the Thames Tideway Tunnel, highlighting achievements across environment, economy, health, people, and place. With 92% of legacy commitments on track and a confirmed 28% reduction in embedded carbon against original estimates, the project demonstrates how major infrastructure can integrate sustainability into core delivery.

Standout outcomes include over 5.7 million tonnes of material moved by river, reducing HGV movements by 344,000; the creation of three acres of public realm; £1.9 billion in green financing rated ‘Dark Green’ by S&P; and 151 sustained apprenticeships. Tideway’s holistic approach linked financing to performance, enhanced ecological value along the Thames, and promoted inclusive employment and innovation.

This report offers a comprehensive legacy model for future infrastructure programmes.
