In Memory of Professor Stephen Wearne

Published

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Professor Stephen Wearne, lately of the University of Manchester.

Stephen was a pioneering figure in the field of project management and a long-time friend and supporter of the Major Projects Association. His influence – alongside peers such as Peter Thompson, Martin Barnes, Peter Morris, and John Perry helped to shape the way we understand and manage complex projects today.

In 2022, to celebrate 40 years of the Association, Stephen joined Professor Graham Winch for a podcast interview reflecting on the early days of the discipline, the founding of the first Manchester School of Project Research, and the profound impact of that remarkable group of researchers. The conversation remains a rich and insightful account of a career dedicated to learning and leadership in major projects. You can listen to the episode here.

Stephen’s legacy lives on in the generations of professionals and researchers he influenced. He will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
