Launching The Dr Martin Barnes Bursary for The Challenge of Major Projects

In honour of the late Dr Barnes, we have established a bursary fund to offer this opportunity to someone who may not otherwise have the chance to join the 4 part CMP course which runs from January 2024.

More than 20 years ago our then Executive Director, Dr Martin Barnes, launched our one-week course entitled The Challenge of Major Projects. The aim of the course was to offer a cross-sectoral environment for leaders of major projects to discuss the challenges they faced and to hear from experienced major project professionals on topics that spanned the life-cycle of a typical project – from initiation, governance and funding through stakeholder and risk management and finally through to delivery.

The course proved to be an immediate success and the Association has been offering it to a small cohort of professionals ever since. This year, in honour of the late Dr Barnes, we have established a bursary fund to offer this opportunity to someone who may not otherwise have the chance to join the 4 part course which runs from January 2024. This might be someone who works for a small organisation which does not have the funds for the course fee. We are particularly keen to welcome applications from people working for non-member companies.

Details of the bursary

  • The fund is open to members and non-members of the Association.
  • The value of the bursary is up to £4,820 (we would expect a contribution in the region of £500).
  • The successful candidate will be chosen by the Studies and Knowledge Committee on 12th December and will be informed in writing shortly after that date.
  • Deadline for applications is 30th November 2023.

If you are interested in applying, please write to Andy Murray (andy.murray@majorprojects.org) enclosing your CV and a covering letter setting out why you feel you would benefit from joining the course and why the bursary scheme would be your only opportunity to do so.
