Programmes with Purpose

Summary

Delivering success in government’s major projects

Programmes with Purpose ReportThe CBI and Turner & Townsend have partnered together on a new report – Programmes with purpose: delivering success in government’s major projects – to identify the best practice and bigger picture thinking necessary in the Government Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP).

Last month’s Budget demonstrated the need to ensure taxpayers’ money is spent wisely. Latest figures suggest whole life expenditure across the government’s major projects is £542 billion. But almost three quarters (135/184) of major projects are flagged as unlikely to deliver outputs to cost and time. The government must improve on this to reach its objectives. Addressing these challenges are not aspirations; they are imperatives. And with the help of this report, the government can work to make success a reality.

Programmes with purpose provides ministers, civil servants, and frontline practitioners in both the public and private sectors with a compendium of best practice. It presents a reference guide that clarifies the policy, regulation, and guidance already out there. CBI research shows at least 170 different publications or documents launched in the UK in the past decade which should be considered by stakeholders delivering major projects. This reference guide cuts through the noise, highlighting where to begin and demonstrating what works.
